Elizabethan Hairstyles - Historical And Modern Versions

Elizabethan era hairstyles were very 'over the top' in my opinion, usually those hairstyle would be very big and exaggerated using special padding to enhance the volume of the hair so it appears that the woman has a lot more hair than she actually does. Not every single hairstyle in the Elizabethan era was 'big' some hair styles I have notice were very simple short up do with curled and kind of frizzy looking hair which right now in our generations frizzy hair does not look appealing, its fascinating how much beauty icons has changed over the years. Elizabethan hairstyles involved styling the hair in the heart shape which I think looks very pretty and accessorizing with jewelry like pearls. Accessorized hair was very popular in the Elizabethan age, they have used veils, chains, gems, pears, feathers so it looks even more extravagant! I think only upper class women had such hairstyle because it would show their power, wealth, that they can afford jewelry that has been put in their hair and they can afford hairstylists that would style their hair perfectly.

Elizabethan hairstyles are still used to this day I have noticed that usually Elizabethan hair is used on models for runway shows or some are slightly modified to fit in modern society.

Heart shaped hairstyle was very popular hairstyle back in Elizabethan era. This hairstyle can only be seen on runways or specific photo shoots that represent the historical theme.

Plaits were popular in Elizabethan era but is also popular and common to wear for a regular person in today's society. The hairstyles are slightly modified and different not so frizzy and detailed, you can see that the image on the right has a lot looser plait this way creating casual look, the image on the left shows very precise detail were the plait is very tight and it looks like its wrapped around her head also the curls are much tighter and more frizzy looking.

Another curl/plait hairstyle, this hairstyle looks a little bit more complicated but you can clearly see the plaits going through the hair in both pictures, the picture on the left has more frizzy look and not so neat, however the picture on the right has a lot more neat curls and plait which in today's society looks a lot more flattering than frizzy curls and plaits.

I have experimented in the class and tried to recreate some of the the hairstyles that were popular in Elizabethan era.

I got inspired to do plaits with ribbons by looking on the internet and browsing for Elizabethan hairstyle that were popular at that time and I came across a lot of plait and ribbon hairstyles so I decided to modified and make it a little bit different but still keep the concept that it has plaits and ribbons.

I also wanted to learn how to create perfect fishtail plait, regular plait and a bun. The picture that I have found was the hairstyle that was popular in the Elizabethan era, I was inspired by the amount of different plaits that were used in this hairstyle.

Regular plait.                                              Fishtail plait.

A bun created by creating a ponytail, then sectioning the hair from a ponytail into four sections and slightly teasing each section, then flip them forward and using the hair clips secure the ends of the section by clipping them to the hair, once each section is clipped back, more hair clips needed to connect each section to the nearest one, this way hiding the gaps in between the sections.
